Annual Ball Report

A fantastic night yesterday at the Hotel Parc Belair at the Irish Club's Charity Ball (theme: Hollywood Glamour).

After Club President Carrie Milne welcomed the 90+ attendees and Irish Ambassador Diarmuid O'Leary complimented the club on its achievements, a delicious 3-course buffet meal was consumed by all.

Geoff Thompson assumed the role of auctioneer for the evening and with the help of committee members Fiona Mulhern and Hilary Fitzgibbon, auctioned off 40 items in aid of the Ilula Orphan Program in Tanzania and the Thailand Boat Project, raising more than €4,000 in the process.

The Oscars for Best Female went to Grainne McKean, for Best Male to Mark Summers and for best couple to Peter & Angela Milne. The dance floor then filled up with Radio Daze playing into the small hours of the morning. Thanks to Liz O'Connor too for her event planning.

Finally, John Chalmers and Geoff Thompson both left the event minus their goatees, shaved off in aid of charity by Sam O'Dea. All in a good cause!

Fancy skiing with the Irish Club in France?

Now that summer is over and we are all beavering away back at work, its time to plan winter holidays already. Does a ski trip to France with Luxembourg's Irish Club sound tempting?

The trip will last four days this year, unlike previous years when it was three. A bus will leave Luxembourg on Wednesday 25 January 2012, and return 29 January. The event organisers are quick to point out that as departure is at 1pm on the Wednesday, those who travel will only have to take two and a half days off work for four full days of skiing!

We have decided to take the trip to France rather than Switzerland this year due to the bad euro, Swiss-franc exchange rate, but right to the border! Morzine is the destination meaning that skiers and snowboarders get the best of both worlds by being able to ski in and out of Switzerland.

As the bus has space for 53 people, if you are interested, you are advised to book as soon as possible.

Full ski-trip details:

* Destination - Morzine (France) in the Portes du Soleil.

* Over 650km of ski slopes across 12 ski resorts in France and Switzerland accessible with one ski pass.

*Suitable for all levels of skiers and snowboarders- excellent for beginners right up to experienced skiers/boarders who fancy taking on the infamous Swiss Wall.

* Numerous snow parks including the Burton designed "The Stash" which has been described as "a snowboarder's heaven".

* Lots for non skiers/boarders to do including ice skating, snow shoe treking, paragliding, scuba diving under ice, horse drawn sleigh rides and numerous spa/beauty clinics.

* Hotel - 3* Tremplin Hotel in the centre of Morzine, ski in and out, adjacent to the main Pleney gondola.

* Double/twin or single rooms available.

* Great apres ski and nightlife.

* 30% discount on ski hire organised

* Discount on lessons and mountain guiding (all levels catered for) and for the lift pass (the amount of the discount will depend on the final number of people)

* Price includes transport by luxury coach, 4 nights bed and breakfast and 3 evening meals including wine.

* Earlybird Price (up to 31st October) - Member €450, non member €470 (price per person sharing a twin or double room). For single room - member €555, non member €575.

* From 1st November onwards - Member €500, non member €520 (price per person sharing a twin or double room). For single room - member €605, non member €625.

* Deposit of €250 payable to:
Bank: BGL BNP Paribas
Account: Irish Club of Luxembourg
IBAN: LU08 0030 2513 4451 0000
BIC: BGLLLULL

Charity Sponsored Walk - Sunday 25 September 2011

25 Sep 2011 14:30

This year's charity sponsored walk is to raise funds for the Children's Medical & Research Foundation of Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Dublin.

This year the walk is in the heart of the country, Larochette and gives everybody an opportunity to discover the "Little Switzerland" region of Luxembourg.

The walk will begin from Larochette Town Hall, where there is plenty of parking close by, at 2.30 pm (14:30).

The route is approximately 8.8 km and is suitable for all levels of walker including those with young children and we estimate that the walk can be completed in about 2.5 hours at a leisurely pace.

The finish point is also the Town Hall in Larochette and we will have a get together in a local restaurant for food and drink afterwards.

If people would like, there is a possibility to visit the Chateau de Larochette after the walk as it will also be the last day of an art exhibition in the chateau “L’Art Rochette”. Please allow for at least another hour to walk to the Chateau and to see the building.

If you wish to walk then please let us know by email to committee[@]irishclub.lu so that we know how many people to expect on the day. It will also help the organising of the walk if you let us know that you will stay on for our get together.

The St Willibrord Lecture 2011

3 Mar 2011 20:00

From Celtic Dawn to Celtic Tiger

The Irish Language Club of Luxembourg proudly presents The Willibrord Lecture 2011

entitled

From Celtic Dawn to Celtic Tiger

by Professor Diarmaid Ferriter of University College Dublin

on Thursday March 3rd 2011 at 20:00

in the Salles des Fêtes of the European School.

The Irish teachers of the European School have organised a public lecture by Professor Dr Diarmaid Ferriter, Chair of Modern History at University College, Dublin.

Professor Ferriter was born in Dublin in 1972. He attended University College, Dublin from which he obtained his B.A. (1991) and PhD (1996). He lectured in Modern Irish History at U.C.D. from 1996-1998 and subsequently served as both researcher and writer with the Dictionary of Irish Biography from 1998-1999. He was senior lecturer in Irish History at St Patrick's College D.C.U. from 1999-2008. Professor Ferriter was appointed Chair of Modern Irish History at University College, Dublin, in 2008. His main interests include social, political and cultural history of twentieth century Ireland. Professor Ferriter lives in Dublin.

In his lecture "From Celtic Dawn to Celtic Tiger", Professor Ferriter will offer a general overview of the key political, social and economic developments in Ireland between 1900 and 2000. Professor Ferriter is a remarkably talented speaker and a formost authority on modern Irish history. He has published widely and to international critical acclaim on this subject and has lectured on Irish history in many countries. It is undoubtedly a great coup for the European School and for the Irish community of Luxembourg that he has agreed to deliver the 2011 Saint Willibrord Lecture at the European School.

Entry is €10 per person.
